My life on QC?!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Dar’s been listening to a lot of Queen lately… It’s our homework before we catch the “We Will Rock You” musical in April… And he found a song just for me…

It isn’t the most flattering song… Lyd will tell you that… but Dar still managed to convince me that it’s rather cute… Even has it on his msn nick…

And to my amusement, that song was featured on today’s strip of QC!!

To my boss who doesn’t stalk this blog but somehow knew the blog address anyway:

Thanks for attempting to give me a treat for my birthday!!
Really appreciate it.
Even though I ended up paying instead.

Heh.

Perfect Day

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

My birthday this year falls on a bad day. It falls on a public holiday. And not just ANY public holiday…

The FIRST DAY OF CHINESE NEW YEAR.

“Why is that so bad?”, you may ask.

Well, it’s hard to have a quiet birthday when you’re visiting every single family member and extended family member you ever had. It’s hard to go out cos all the shops and restaurants are closed. It’s hard to meet your own boyfriend cos he’s got his entire family to visit. It’s hard to follow tradition and meet your best friend the evening before your birthday cos you have a reunion dinner to go for. It’s hard to see your own family cos your married sisters have their own in laws and in law’s relations to go visit. It’s hard to go out with your parents when everyone else is coming to your place to visit your parents.

It’s just hard.

So, to save all that trouble, my dar and I celebrated my birthday yesterday. An entire day, together. =)

First thing in the morning, (or as early as we could wake up anyway) we went to visit my darling niece who was down with a bad cold over the past few days. She was getting a lot better and was rather pleased to have us around. She’s learned to pose for the camera. Like a ROCKSTAR…

And yes, that’s dar dar posing like Wenyinyin…

Then we headed down to town, where I got my two surprises for the day… =)

Then it was lunch at Thai Express to use my $15 birthday voucher… 27 Dresses AGAIN… (becos I was in a cheesy mood)… And our favourite haunt…

We met the cell for CNY dinner, and had a mini birthday celebration…

SIDETRACK:

To my favourite cell mates…

“I love the present and the lovely cake! Thank you all for everything!!”

To end off the day, dar brought me down to boat quay to watch the lights and the river and just enjoy each other’s company… before he took a long bus ride with me to my home…

You’re probably wondering why that was such a perfect day. We didn’t do anything extraordinary or different. It could have been any other date. But well, my love language is time, the most expensive commodity in Sg. And having someone I love spend an entire day with me, means far more than having the most expensive presents or the most exciting date.

So yeah, I’ve had a perfect day.

And the best thing is… It wouldn’t be too hard to have another…

ish!

Talk of weddings

Friday, October 26th, 2007

The biggie sis is finally married off… Happily, I must add.

In fact, today’s the day she flies off for her honeymoon.

Amid all the fanfare, and all the business of blood red roses, creeping vines, gold ribbons, posies, fancy heavy gowns, song choices, matchy-matchy dresses, make up, photos, pre-prepared speeches, we managed to survive the entire weekend… No serious hiccups, nothing. Nothing to dampen the mood of the wedding.

It was a beautiful event.

I had the privilege of being the impromptu maid-of-honour @ the church. I stood next to my sis, in a matchy-matchy bridesmaid dress (all her arrangement, of cos), and I could feel her joy as she worshipped God and listened to the exaltation from her pastor. Felt like I was giving her away too!

How long she waited for this day, I wouldn’t know. She never talks about this sort of thing to me. Nevertheless, I thank God for the few extra years I spent with her (after mommie sis got married and moved out). Cos I never used to be close to my biggie sis. I mean, I loved her and all, but I was always a bit afraid of her, and I’d never tell her things the way I’d tell mommie sis.

Things change when you’re sharing the same bedroom and bathroom.

I learnt to know her a bit better, understand her a bit better, be a bit more involved in her life. And I managed to give her a meaningful gift in the chapel that afternoon. A big change from before, when I would never know what she wants.

I’ve started to miss having her around at home, and in the room. If she married before mommie sis, I wouldn’t have felt it this much, i think.

  • No more biggie sis to shout “XIN!” to wake me up in the mornings. (1 shout is all it takes.)
  • No more biggie sis to squeeze in the train with me to Raffles Place.
  • No more biggie sis to scold me for letting dad buy breakfast and carry it.
  • No more biggie sis to fine me $5 for leaving the wireless on overnight.
  • No more biggie sis to make iced orange cordial for dinner.
  • No more biggie sis to stone in front of the tv with.
  • No more biggie sis to come into the room every evening saying , “hey! there’s a stranger in my room!” (She’s a funny sister, she is.)

I’m glad she found the ww. (I don’t think it’s polite to mention his full nickname here.) Can’t imagine any other person who complements her so well. Plus, he’s really good to us. ***BONUS PTS***

Now that her wedding is over and she’s happily living in her fancy-shmancy apartment with her husband, the rest of us are recovering from the exhaustion of that weekend. Just yesterday, our laundry finally started coming back. Heh.

But the wedding thing doesn’t seem to stop there.

Everyone assumes that because my sister is married, it will be my turn soon. And this time, I don’t have the excuse of being a student… Just the very valid reason of being too poor to afford a wedding or a flat (that no one else really cares about). Oh, and the fact that I still feel very young and want to do more things with my life before I think of settling down (which also doesn’t stick in the minds of people much).

On top of that, I’m coming into that age where my friends are starting to tie the knot. Went for 2 weddings already, 2 are engaged (according to their facebook profiles), a couple of others are planning their weddings, 1 of them is planning to propose. Some are telling me to settle down. Including my boss, who is still single (which is a bit of a double standard if you ask me).

To be very frank, the fact that I’m attached to someone I love very dearly and who loves me very dearly, isn’t a good enough reason for me to rush into marriage. Couples in my church do tend to marry quite young, but I’m uncomfortable with that. Marrying at 24, 25, 26? Not such a good idea. I know myself and I’d still be indecisive, immature and rash.

“Divorce, is not an option.”

That’s the church’s view. That’s my view. There’s no way I’d ever want to be divorced. It’s even more painful than a normal break up, so I’d wanna really consider if I want to get into marriage, and whether I’m even ready for it. The long term commitment thing still daunts me.

I’m sure though, that when I finally decide to get into it, it’ll be quite an experience. And I’d be really happy to do it… Spending the rest of my life with the one person I can fully trust and lean on… The thought puts a smile on my face.

Making it all worthwhile…

Wenyinyin has become a real terror in the family…

She’s grumpy whenever she’s in a strange house. She cries even with her mother around. She frowns and pouts at food she doesn’t like, and she screams… It’s hard to please her… Only YK makes her laugh, and she likes listening to live guitar music (which is basically me playing for a long time)…

But then she makes it really worthwhile…

Cos last weekend, while I was playing the guitar, she started climbing towards the guitar until she could touch it, then she placed her little hands on it, intrigued by the sounds coming from it. And she smiled!

Pedal Ubin

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Went cycling @ Pulau Ubin with the dar dar two Saturdays ago.

It was Pedal Ubin, a free guided cycling tour on Ubin, on every first saturday of the month. If the dar never thought to drag me down for it, I would never have gone. After all, I’d never been to Ubin before, and I had no idea what it was like. Plus, waking up at 6am on a Saturday was just unthinkable.

I didn’t regret it.

The boat ride

Ubin is so cute and quaint! It’s kinda commercialized, with the renovated jetty and all the mountain bikes for rent. But unlike overly sanitized and nauseatingly artificial Sentosa, Ubin still retains a big part of its rustic charm and original infrastructure (or lack thereof). The moment I stepped on the island, I was in a different world. I thought I’d flown off to Thailand or Vietnam.

It’s the ultimate overseas travel on a tiny shoestring. $4 for the boat rides there and back, $6 for a bike rental, and a whole morning of exercise and ubin sightseeing.

On Pulau Ubin

The guides were very chatty and interesting. They brought us around the east of Ubin, introduced us to lots of plants, folklore, and animal calls. We went near Chek Jawa, tackling some rather steep slopes, but we got to see the quarry and smell the strongly scented tembusu flowers.

Me — Exhausted

It was an eventful trip. One of the girls fell down and scraped her knee. She was a real good sport about it too. There were 2 bike breakdowns, and half the group kinda got lost in the final leg of the journey. We weren’t lost cos Dar knew his way around the island. The guide was new to the east part of the island so she lead them the wrong way. Wasn’t for long though.

Felt a real sense of accomplishment after completing the entire trail. To top it all off, dar and I each got our own coconut drink. Cool and refreshing.

Wenyinyin Updates!

Monday, June 11th, 2007

An entire week without a post… Scary… Hopefully the schedule will lighten up and I can put up all my drafts…

Just a little note about the little baby…

@ 6months, she now has a condition called - Stranger anxiety.

So it means, she’s starting to be afraid of her nanny, her court jester, and everyone else besides…

The only thing that calms her down, is the sound of the acoustic guit…

Babysitting is just gonna get harder.

Amusing Weiyinyin

Monday, June 4th, 2007

There are a few ways to amuse a Wenyinyin…

  1. Play her a song on the classical guitar
  2. Tell her a long story about flowers
  3. Put a YK in front of her
  4. Bring her for a walk to the playground
  5. Take lots of photographs
  6. Bring her on the see saw
  7. Sing her Jason Mraz
  8. Bring her on the slide
  9. March - with her in carrier
  10. Be a very bad ventriloquist and put a toy Sparky in front of her and make it bark

Twas a long day…
