By an amazing twist of circumstances, I got off work 2 hrs earlier than expected, and went to catch Spiderman 3 on Monday!

Spiderman 3 Poster

My colleagues, and my good ol’ buddy Miss Ha told me that it was very draggy and long and boring. I was rather worried that it would be a disappointment. Like many other sequels…

For what it’s worth, all that bad review about the movie wasn’t enough to sway tons of people from watching it. We only managed to get third row seats. Everything else behind us was fully booked. Ah well… I guess it’s one of those shows that you need to see for yourself to convince yourself that it was bad show…

Guess what?

I loved it!

I couldn’t really see where it was draggy. I was riveted to the screen for the entire 2 hours! The plot development, the way they established the new characters, and tied it together, it was a nicely planned story! And the effects were cool, as always.

I just have 2 gripes about it.

 1. Why does Spidey always have his mask off? It defeats the whole purpose of being a masked superhero doesn’t it?
 2. The way they let Harry discover the truth about his father was kinda sloppy. Someone just wanted to get that over and done with quickly. Quite a letdown, after all that build up and suspense from the 2 prequels.

But other than that, it was a good show…

TBP Rating: Worth a watch… Even if just to convince yourself that it’s bad or otherwise.

Leonidas: You, what is your profession?

Arcadian: I’m a potter, sir.

Leonidas: And you, Arcadian, what is your profession?

Arcadian: I’m a sculptor.

Leonidas: And you?

Arcadian: I’m a blacksmith.

Leonidas: Spartans! What is your profession?

Spartans: Harooh! Harooh! Harooh!

Random voice in my head: Uneducated… Clearly not answering the question…

Meant to blog about this ages and ages ago…

Blood Diamond

Blood Diamond (Movie Teaser Poster)

Blood Diamond was one of the best Hollywood film I’d seen in a long time. Was getting so annoyed with all the silly hyped up shows that really aren’t anything more than bells and whistles just enough to fill the trailors. At least this one lived up to expectations.

“A blood diamond (also called a conflict diamond or a war diamond) is a diamond mined in a war zone and sold, usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army’s war efforts” - Wikipedia

The movie is set in Sierra Leone in the late 1990s, right in the midst of civil war… Where diamonds are mined and smuggled to neighbouring countries for cash & arms, fueling the war effort…

I’m glad Charles Leavitt did his research…

There’s a lot of truth in the movie. (More about the UN resolution toward conflict diamonds here)

The fighting, the smuggling, and the brutality were all very real. It was commonplace for the rebels to chop off the arms of people to force them into compliance, and kidnap young boys and condition them to become ruthless killers. And not just in Africa either, but in any place where war and conflicts occur…

Overall, the cinematography was excellent. Edward Zwick did an excellent job of weaving the whole story together. The story kept me captivated throughout the show… I was particularly pleased that he didn’t distract from the plot by putting in the cliched bedroom scene between Maddy (Jennifer Connelly) & Danny (Leonardo Di Caprio). About time too!

The acting was truly top notch.

Di Caprio’s performance as Danny Archer, smuggler and selfishness personified, is a real cut from his past acting stints. He really looked rough and tough, as his character was supposed to be. Djimon Hounsou was an excellent actor, moving the story along, and tugging your heartstrings together with him. (I cried when he did…) Jennifer Connelly had a very minor part in the show, but even then, she makes sure you never forget her intense glares. (She’s a cool woman!)

TBP Rating: Well worth the weekend ticket & the DVD…

After this our exile

I had high hopes for this show

The trailer is good, the poster is cool, the story sounds interesting, the reviews are excellent, and the awards it received were also very impressive… Not to mention the director is Patrick Tam, mentor to my favourite director, Wong Kar Wai.

But it turned out to be a real disappointment…For one thing… 2 mins into the movie, and Kay was complaining about jump cuts… That is pretty unforgivable for an reputable film I think…

Plot: (Taken from a review by NYTimes)

There was a time when Chow Cheong-shing (Aaron Kwok) was considered a smooth-talking ladies’ man, but many years of gambling have turned him into a bitter and abusive shell of his former self. When Chow’s admiring young son (Gow Ian Iskander) reveals to his father that his mother is packing her bags and planning a hasty getaway, the enraged Chow delivers a merciless beating to the woman that leaves father and son to fend for themselves. Now forced to resort to petty thievery as a means of helping dad pay off a series of lingering gambling debts, the young boy soon ends up locked away in a juvenile-detention facility. Soon thereafter, when Chow drops by to visit his son, the boy launches a vicious attack on his father that drives the pair apart for more than a decade. Years later, Chow’s son has grown into a man, and is suddenly stricken with an overpowering bout of nostalgia and that leads him back to his old hometown and the quiet streets of his youth. Just then, far off in the distance, the emotionally scarred son catches a glimpse of a man who appears to be his father.

The story sounds good right??

For some reason, a lot of that emotion didn’t come thru. It wasn’t even the problem of the actors… This was probably Aaron Kwok’s best acting that I’ve seen in years… Charlie Yeung and Ian Gow were good too… (I also loved that the movie was set in Malaysia… It seems relatively more familiar than if it were set in say Hongkong.)

I’d attribute the problem to the post production editing… The story didn’t seem to have a build up to a climax… The setting and characters were established all right… But the pace did not pick up from there. That made the first part of the show seem too long drawn, boring even…

Another problem was the fact that I read the reviews ahead of time and was waiting for the action to happen… But it didn’t happen whenever I expected it to… The ending was even more abrupt! I knew it was the end because of the reviews, but the rest of the audience in the theatre went “What? End already?”

That cannot be a very good sign.

I suspected that we didn’t get to watch the full 160min version, which Tam himself professed to be the best. Cos I noticed that some of the scenes from the trailer were missing!

I found out later that there are three versions: one for China, one for Malaysia, and one for the rest of the world. It’s fine that we didn’t get the full version. We didn’t even get the version our neighbours got! The websites say that the China version is 120mins and incidentally, that’s the runtime of the movie as shown on Shaw’s website. Man…

TBP Rating: Find that elusive 160min version. Otherwise, don’t watch.

Happy Feet Trailer

If you liked that one, the Warner Brother’s website has got all the other trailers.

Mumble’s a weird kind of penguin. Every penguin can sing, and they all have a heartsong with which to attract their mate. Unfortunately, due to a little freak accident during the incubation period, Mumble was born unable to sing. But he could tap dance. He goes through a journey of accepting himself, getting others to accept him, and in turn, saving his entire colony. (Bravo…)

Happy Feet is definitely an animation made for children - a fun soundtrack, a stellar cast of voice actors (Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Nichole Kidman, Hugo Weaving), a whole bunch of dancing and singing penguins. You’d think TBP would give it her 2 thumbs up.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

I found the story a bit strange, and I couldn’t put my finger to it, so I went to read what others said. Robert W. Butler of The Kansas City Star made some pretty good observations that reflected what I was feeling:

Happy Feet” isn’t nearly happy enough.

Yes, yes, I know. Penguins are just about the cutest critters in creation, and a movie with thousands of the waddling birds should charm the pants off us.

But despite a great look and some nifty action sequences, this computer-animated effort doesn’t click. It piles lots of contemporary issues on what should be a simple children’s fable and becomes an overlong, emotionally muted and tiresome epic.

“Happy Feet” is so intent on delivering an ecological lesson and promoting tolerance that its drama suffers.

I think that pretty much sums it up. Either that, or I’ve outgrown animations.

TBP Rating: For the kids… Just for the kids…

One of those movies that you can really watch with your mother… At least, I can… My mum watched it before I was born and loved it…

I first watched it in (of all places) Bangladesh… Jess loved it, so i got the VCD and we watched it on her white ibook in Peter’s kitchen on a stormy evening when the power was off… And i’m not kidding…

It’s a beautiful movie… a moving story… And you can watch it on my Youtube Playlist

Tony Leung is so cool.

Casino Royale

Whenever I read the title of this show… I’m tempted to read it as Cashino Royale, like the actor in my fren’s FYP short film “Inspector X”… Haha… If you can get hold of that DVD, watch it! It’s hilarious…

But, anyway…

I never actually intended to watch Casino Royale… Ended up watching it twice… I must say though, it was very different from the previous Bond movies…

I don’t have any real recollection of catching a Bond movie in the past. But I did have the impression that they were all just action flicks, where Bond has his silly catchphrases and cheesy dialogue, sleeps around with every woman in sight, then goes and saves the day with nary a scratch on his body. Not to mention the dancing naked women in silhouette in the opening sequence. Shows like that, are quickly relegated to the back of one’s consciousness…

So, I was pleasantly surprise to see that this James bond film was completely different… Might even venture to say, he had more of a backbone. He doesn’t treat women like whores (He doesn’t care for them at all)… He really fights and kills… And he doesn’t care how his martini is served…

I won’t say more about it cos I know some of the exam muggers still haven’t caught it yet. But I’d just leave a warning… Because this James Bond is less superficial and more brutal, the movie tends to get rather gruesome. If you can handle a little more bloodshed than the average James Bond, I think you’ll like it…

TBP Rating: Worth a watch… But not two…

I watch a lot of movies…

And when I put off blogging about them, that’s when they all pile up and I end up having a whole backlog of movies unreviewed… Decided to write them all at once… So here goes!

Disclaimer: Some of the movies are really old… That’s how much of a procrastinator I am…

Daddy just bought the Canon Powershot G7.
canonG7_frontback

Had so much fun playing around with it today.

Never thought i’d like a consumer camera after my own D70. But this one is pretty cool.

It’s 10Megapix (my DSLR is only 6 Megapix), small, compact, ISO 80 - 1600, F2.8 - 4.8, 7.4mm - 44.4mm (a very good wide angle lens) and you can add other lens extensions and your own flash. It’s got great features like Stitch Assist, Audio & Video recording, and fully manual functions!

And because it uses SD cards, transferring of pictures will be a breeze, cos my lappie comes with a built-in SD card reader!

It’s my ideal blogging companion.
